How to Improve Chinese 综合填空: A Practical O-Level Guide
TestPapersFree · 2026-10-24 20:17:07
If you regularly score three out of five in 综合填空, memorising longer vocabulary lists may not be the only change you need. You may recognise every option but still miss the meaning of a phrase, a linking word or the relationship between two sentences.
Practise choosing a word for a reason you can explain. That makes each correction useful beyond the passage you have just completed.
Check the format for your examination
In the 2026 O-Level Chinese syllabus, code 1160, 综合填空 consists of five multiple-choice questions worth five marks within Paper 2. Candidates choose the most appropriate answers using the passage and its context. It is a distinct task from 词语替换.
This format reference is for Chinese 1160, not Higher Chinese, Chinese B or every secondary assessment. For another examination year or SEC subject level, check the current SEAB syllabus and your teacher's instructions. Keep practising the other components too; cloze is only one part of the examination.
A five-step method for each passage
- Read for the main meaning. Before choosing answers, identify the situation, people and overall message. Do not stop at every unfamiliar word on the first read.
- Read around the blank. Look at the whole sentence and, where needed, the sentences before and after it.
- Identify the job of the missing word. Does the sentence need an action, a description or a link such as a contrast or a result?
- Compare meanings and usage. Eliminate options that do not fit the sentence's meaning or natural word combination.
- Reread with your answer inserted. Check that the completed sentence fits the paragraph, not just the few words beside the blank.
Worked example: use the relationship between ideas
Original practice example: 他每天坚持练习,____终于掌握了这项技能。
Options: 因此 / 但是 / 例如 / 否则
Answer: 因此. The second part describes the result of his daily practice. 但是 introduces a contrast, 例如 introduces an example and 否则 introduces an alternative consequence. The relationship between the ideas gives you a reason to choose; knowing a rough English translation for each option is only a starting point.
Worked example: learn words with their partners
Original practice example: 老师提醒我们要____良好的阅读习惯。
Options: 培养 / 修理 / 参观 / 到达
Answer: 培养. 培养习惯 is an appropriate combination here. Record the phrase 培养良好的阅读习惯, then create your own sentence with it. Learning the word together with a useful phrase gives you more information about how to use it.
These examples were written for this guide. They are not past examination questions or predictions of what will be tested.
Make a correction log with reasons
After marking, write the sentence, your chosen option, the answer and why your choice did not fit. Classify the problem: an unknown word, confusion between similar words, an unfamiliar phrase or a missed clue in the passage.
For an unknown word, record its meaning and an example. For a phrase, learn the combination. For a missed clue, underline the part of the passage that should have guided you. Check uncertain usage with a teacher or a reliable dictionary when reviewing at home.
Do not simply copy the correct letter. If you cannot explain why it works, ask for clarification before moving on to another passage.
A short practice routine
As an adjustable example, use a few minutes to read a short passage, attempt its cloze questions and review one or two errors. Revisit selected words or phrases the next day and later in the week. Try using them in a fresh sentence without looking at your notes.
When ready, complete a new passage with a time limit agreed with your teacher, within the demands of the full paper. There is no benefit in perfecting one small section while leaving too little time for the remaining tasks.
How parents can help without giving away the answer
Ask “Which words in the passage helped you decide?” or “Why does the other option not fit?” Let the student finish an independent attempt before discussing it. If the whole passage is too difficult, choose a shorter text and rebuild the missing vocabulary first.
For students rebuilding basic reading confidence, our Primary Chinese practice collection offers lower-level material; it is not an O-Level mock-paper collection. For examination-level Chinese practice, use your school's suitable materials and the authorised sources of official past-year papers. The secondary collection can support revision in your other subjects.
