Combined Science to JC: Can You Take H2 Sciences?
TestPapersFree · 2026-10-26 08:10:26
JC admission and H2 subject entry are different decisions
Taking Combined Science does not, by itself, settle whether JC is an option. The useful questions are whether you meet the admission requirements for your intake and whether your chosen college permits the H2 combination you want. A recent Singapore student discussion mixed these two questions together. Checking them separately gives families a much clearer plan.
Check the college, the combination and the intake year
A forum reply describing one student’s route is not a rule for every JC. Start with the current subject-combination page of each college on your shortlist. Look for the exact science disciplines you studied, required grades, Mathematics prerequisites, selection tests and any bridging arrangements. An offer to a college does not automatically mean approval for every combination it offers.
For example, JPJC’s official FAQ discusses Combined Science applicants seeking two H2 sciences and states a preference for a distinction in the relevant Combined Science disciplines, or the stated Pure/Combined Science alternative. That is a college-specific example, not a universal guarantee. Ask admissions staff to confirm how the published criteria apply to your actual results and intended year.
Build a three-column shortlist
For each target college, record: admission route and intake year; eligibility for your preferred H2 subjects; and a combination you would genuinely accept if the first choice is unavailable. Keep the official link beside every requirement. If information is missing, send a focused question naming your exact subjects rather than asking only whether Combined Science is accepted.
For students choosing upper-secondary subjects now, distinguish interest from workload. Ask your science teacher which conceptual and practical skills you already handle confidently, and what extra preparation a future H2 course would require. Choosing a subject solely because it sounds more prestigious can leave less time to develop genuine understanding.
Use practice papers to diagnose gaps, not predict eligibility
Try a small set from our Combined Science Chemistry papers or Combined Science Physics collection. Mark unfamiliar concepts, weak explanations and procedural slips separately. Then revisit those topics with your teacher before attempting another timed set.
You can also browse JC test papers to see the style of later questions. Difficulty with an unfamiliar H2 paper before receiving H2 teaching is not an admissions verdict. Use it to formulate questions about the course, not to label yourself incapable.
Questions to take to an open house
- Is my particular science pairing accepted for this combination?
- Are the published grades minimum requirements, preferences or selection criteria?
- Are additional tests or bridging lessons involved?
- What alternative combinations are available, and do they fit my later course interests?
Confirm current requirements directly before making a subject or school decision. Do not carry one cohort’s rules forward unchanged.
