Behind on JC Lectures? A Practical Catch-Up Plan

TestPapersFree · 2026-10-26 08:10:26

When watching a lecture does not lead to understanding

A student in a Singapore JC discussion described struggling to connect lecture explanations with the reasoning required in class. If that sounds familiar, spending another evening replaying every video may not solve the actual problem. A useful catch-up plan identifies the first missing step and tests whether you can use it independently.

Sort the backlog before making a timetable

List the topics for one subject and give each a short label: not encountered, partly understood, or ready for practice. Beside each topic, write one question you should be able to answer. For a quantitative subject, that might mean choosing an equation and explaining its assumptions. For an essay subject, it might mean distinguishing two claims and supporting each with evidence.

Start with the oldest prerequisite that blocks the current tutorial. Completing the newest lecture first feels productive, but later explanations may remain confusing if an earlier concept is missing. Ask your tutor which prerequisite matters most rather than treating every unfinished slide as equally urgent.

Use a short learn–attempt–check cycle

As an adjustable starting point, spend about 15 minutes on a specific explanation, then close the notes and attempt one question for 10 minutes. Use the next five minutes to compare your reasoning with the solution. These times are examples, not a required study quota. Shorten or extend the cycle according to the task.

When you get stuck, write the exact line at which your reasoning stops. Classify the gap: definition, diagram, algebra, interpretation or evaluation. Rewatch only the segment connected to that gap. Copying an entire worked answer makes it difficult to tell whether the obstacle has actually been removed.

Make consultations easier to answer

Bring the question, your attempt and one specific uncertainty. For example, explain which condition you thought justified a method and ask why it does not apply. After the consultation, attempt a similar problem without looking at your corrected solution. That second attempt is a better check than whether the explanation sounded clear in the room.

For H2 Mathematics practice, select questions matching the topic just repaired. For General Paper practice, work on one paragraph or question interpretation before a full essay. Use school feedback to select the next step.

Protect the current week while repairing the past

Keep a modest, defined block for backlog work alongside current assignments. Set a concrete stopping condition, such as explaining a concept and solving one related question independently. Do not replace every break or the whole weekend with an undefined instruction to catch up.

After a week, check whether you are starting current tutorials with fewer missing prerequisites. If not, reduce the number of topics and ask for help prioritising. If workload is affecting attendance or daily functioning, tell a trusted adult or school staff member promptly. You do not need to wait until an examination result forces the conversation.
