H2 Economics Case Study Timing: Finish Both Cases With Checkpoints

Protect time for both case studies
An SGExams student asked how to think about answer quality if they might run out of time in H2 Economics. The most useful thing to practise is a plan that prevents one answer from swallowing the rest of the paper. There is no reliable grade prediction based on an unfinished script.
The 2026 H2 Economics 9570 syllabus specifies 150 minutes for Paper 1, with two compulsory 30-mark case studies and all questions to be answered. A practice starting point is 70 minutes for each case and 10 minutes to revisit unfinished items or check answers. This is a rehearsal plan, not an exam rule.
Build checkpoints from the tasks
Within a 70-minute block, try a quick initial scan to spot the tasks, the relevant tables and where the extracts change topic. Then give shorter data tasks a smaller share of the remaining time and reserve more for questions that require analysis or judgement. Include reading and planning inside each block rather than treating them as free time.
If a question asks you to compare two figures, check the years, units and direction before writing the comparison. If it asks you to explain an effect, identify the economic mechanism and connect it to the case. A copied sentence from an extract often consumes time without showing why the evidence answers the question.
Practise a clean stop
At your planned checkpoint, finish the sentence you are writing. If you are stuck, note the question number for review and start the next item. A brief relevant explanation is a better use of remaining time than several unfocused paragraphs that repeat the extract. Follow the paper’s instructions when leaving space or continuing an answer.
During the final check, target unfinished parts first, then missing units, time periods or diagram labels. If an answer requires a judgement, check that it responds to the decision in the question rather than simply restating your analysis.
Diagnose one time leak per session
After a practice case, compare planned and actual time by question. Mark one reason for each overrun: rereading too widely, searching for a diagram, planning too late or rewriting an answer that already addressed the task. Choose one adjustment and try it on a different case.
Before doing a full paper, rehearse one timed case and set a firm stop. Then do both together to see whether your first-case budget survives the pressure of a complete sitting. Check the original paper’s instructions and syllabus year when choosing a practice set.
Rehearse with a short practice log
Use three columns: question, expected finish time and actual finish time. After marking, add a short note about whether the extra minutes improved the answer. If five extra minutes only repeated a definition, practise moving on earlier next time. If the time went into interpreting a graph correctly, keep that reading step and reduce time elsewhere. Compare two practice runs before deciding whether your timing adjustment is helping.
