H1 GP Example Banks: Turn Reading Into Relevant Arguments

Collect arguments, not just impressive facts
A Singapore student discussion asked how successful GP students find examples. It is a useful question for JC students because collecting a long list of events can feel productive without improving an essay. Start with a smaller set of cases you understand, then practise explaining how the evidence supports a claim and where that claim has limits.
Make each entry answer four questions
For each case, record what happened, where the information came from, which argument it could support and what it cannot establish. Include the publication date so you can distinguish a recent development from an older example. If a news article reports a study, follow the link to the original report where practical.
Separate factual notes from your interpretation. A source may report that a programme reached more users; your claim that it improved access requires reasoning about who those users were and what changed. Do not silently turn participation into proof of better outcomes. That distinction gives you something useful to analyse rather than merely another statistic to memorise.
Test relevance against the exact essay wording
Before using an example, identify the question’s scope and judgement. Is it asking about effectiveness, fairness, responsibility or whether a claim is always true? The same event may help with one issue but provide little evidence for another. Explain the connection in a sentence before deciding to keep it.
SEAB’s 2026 H1 GP syllabus emphasises relevant argument, illustration and evaluation. It does not establish a universal number of memorised examples that guarantees a grade. The method here is an editorial practice routine, not an official paragraph formula. Use your teacher’s feedback and the syllabus for your actual examination year.
Practise a claim, evidence and limitation
Try an invented planning exercise about whether digital services make public services more accessible. Your claim might concern convenience, while a limitation concerns people who need help using a device. Find verified evidence for the real case you select rather than inventing a success rate. Then explain how the limitation qualifies the claim.
This practice does not require writing a full essay every time. Produce a short paragraph, underline the reasoning that connects the evidence to the question and check whether the final sentence makes a defensible judgement. If the paragraph only retells the event, revise the explanation before adding more examples.
Review the bank through use
Choose a suitable question from our H1 General Paper collection. Plan an answer first and select evidence second, so the available examples do not dictate an irrelevant essay. Ask a teacher which claims need stronger support or a more precise limitation.
Keep entries that you can explain accurately and update facts that may have changed. Remove a case if you cannot verify it. There is no need to repeat a sensational anecdote or a doubtful quotation simply because it sounds memorable. A compact, reliable bank becomes useful when it supports independent thinking across questions, not when every essay is forced into the same prepared material.
