The Junior College (JC) route and the Polytechnic route to University

By: Wilson, in Category: University

In Singapore, there are two main routes to university: the Junior College (JC) route and the Polytechnic route. While both routes lead to university, the Polytechnic route may be considered easier in some ways.

Here are some reasons why:

  1. Practical skills: Polytechnic courses are designed to provide students with practical skills and hands-on experience in their chosen field. This may give them an advantage over JC students when it comes to applying for university courses related to their diploma.

  2. Direct entry: Polytechnic graduates are eligible for direct entry into some university courses, which means they do not have to compete with JC students for limited places through the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE). This may make it easier for them to secure a place in their preferred course.

  3. Work experience: Polytechnic students are required to complete internships as part of their diploma, which gives them work experience and industry connections that may be useful when applying for university or jobs after graduation.

However, it is important to note that the Polytechnic route may not be suitable for everyone. JC students may have an advantage in certain university courses, such as those that require a strong foundation in academic subjects like Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry. Additionally, Polytechnic courses may be more challenging in terms of workload and require a high level of discipline and time management.

Ultimately, the choice between the JC and Polytechnic routes depends on the student's strengths, interests, and goals. Students should consider their options carefully and seek advice from their teachers, parents, and career counselors before making a decision.
