Understanding the Secondary School System in Singapore

By: Wilson, in Category: Secondary

Singapore's education system is known for its high standards and rigour. In this article, we aim to provide an overview of the secondary school system in Singapore, including the different academic programmes and the streaming process.

  1. Academic Programmes There are three main academic programmes in Singapore's secondary school system: the Express Stream, the Normal (Academic) Stream, and the Normal (Technical) Stream.

The Express Stream is the most academically demanding programme, and it is designed for students who have demonstrated academic aptitude and ability. Students in this programme take a six-year course that culminates in the O-Level exams.

The Normal (Academic) Stream is designed for students who are capable of handling academic work but may need more time and support to do so. Students in this programme take a five-year course that culminates in the N-Level exams.

The Normal (Technical) Stream is designed for students who prefer a more hands-on and practical approach to learning. Students in this programme take a four-year course that culminates in the N-Level exams.

  1. Streaming The streaming process in Singapore is designed to help students maximise their potential by placing them in academic programmes that suit their abilities and interests.

Students are streamed at the end of their primary education based on their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results. Those with high scores are placed in the Express Stream, while those with lower scores may be placed in the Normal (Academic) Stream or the Normal (Technical) Stream.

  1. Co-Curricular Activities Co-curricular activities (CCAs) are an important part of the secondary school experience in Singapore. Students are encouraged to participate in CCAs as a way to develop their talents, skills, and interests outside of the classroom.

There is a wide range of CCAs available, including sports, music, dance, and community service. Participation in CCAs is often a factor in determining admission to junior colleges and polytechnics.

In conclusion, the secondary school system in Singapore is designed to provide students with a rigorous and comprehensive education that prepares them for their future. By understanding the different academic programmes and the streaming process, parents and students can make informed decisions about their education and career pathways.
